Panmunjeom is where the cease fire was signed on Jul. 27, 1953, and it is 50km north of Seoul on Tongilro. The name of the village is Neolmun-ri. It became famous as a place where inter-Korea dialogue and military armistice conferences are held, and is a living educational field of remembering the tragedy of a divided country and the racial pain of a fratricidal war. Panmunjeom is the only JSA (Joint Security Area) in the world, which is commonly occupied and possessed by both armies (the UN and the North Korean army) in a hostile relationship. It was commonly secured by collecting 35 soldiers from each side. However, after the North Korean guard killed US soldiers who were cutting the branches off a cottonwood on Aug. 18, 1976, the military demarcation line was indicated, and only security work became under joint work. Members or press members who belong to either military armistice commission can access all of the places in JSA without a permit. |
