Bangujeong is where Bangchon Hwang Hee(1363∼1452), who was a civil minister and excellent prime minister of the last period of Goryeo and the early stage of the Joseon Dynasty, spent his life after resigning from official position. Since it was built beside the Imjin River and near Nakhajin, it was also called Nakhajeong.
Even after he died, Confucians from 8 regions who admired him kept it as a memorial, but unfortunately, it was burned during the Korean War. Afterwards, descendants around the region restored it partially, and in 1967, it was reconstructed with cement. In 1975,
After that, in 1998, Bangujeong and Yangjidae were rebuilt to the wooden building as part of the historic site improvement project. Bangujeong is situated on Gangan cliff where Imjingang is seen. According to 『Ban-Gi-Jeong-Gi』 of Heo Mok, "the pavilion is located in below Imjin river, 15-RI west from Paju. During the tides, seagulls flock to the river and are full in the sandy plain.
The beautiful view was described as “Gulls come on September. The Sea is 20ri to the west”
