- City Announces “Citizens’ Charter for Peace,” and Declares Itself a “City of Peace” on January 4th, 2010 -

Paju Mayor Hwa-Sun Ryoo has established and announced the Citizens’ Charter for Peace in Paju Book City, the center of Korea’s publication and video industry, on the morning of January 4th, 2010, the 60th anniversary of the Korean War.

Mayor Ryoo said, “Paju is the world’s only city whose border is the line that divides a nation, and is the region that was hit hardest by the Korean War. We are now writing a new chapter in our history by turning a land that has been scarred by confrontation, conflicts, war and death into a land of peace and life.”

He added, “Paju is no longer a remote area located at the northern end of South Korea, but a base for our national unification. It is also the gateway to China and Eurasia, and the starting point from which Korea can reach out toward the world. In particular, Paju is the center of the DMZ, which stretches for 155 miles, a land with abundant ecological resources and a landmark for world peace.”

Mayor Ryoo also emphasized the high respect among the citizens of Paju for the laws and public order. Paju citizens are proud of their high level of integrity, and know how to help and care for others. He expressed the high expectation that Paju citizens will serve as messengers of peace, who will share their commitment to peace with the citizens of Paju’s 13 sister cities in 11 countries on six continents, and other cities that pursue global peace.
